One finals day and two festivals provided the perfect end to the outdoor season for the Hythe Hopefuls.
The finals of the Kent Women’s Softball Cricket League took place at Town Malling Cricket Club at the end of August. The top nine teams of the 32 strong league competed in a series of matches held over the course of the day and at the halfway point just a few runs separated the teams. After all of the matches were completed, Linton Park were crowned champions. A fantastic day was had by all and the talent on display from the teams demonstrated how far women’s softball cricket in Kent has come in just a few years.
Twelve teams entered the Bats and Bubbles Festival at Mersham Cricket Club. Despite winning all of their matches (the final one being completed in the dark!), Hythe came fifth. A perfect evening was rounded off with some singing led by a very talented young man from Mersham.
Sibton Park Cricket Club was the setting for the last festival of the season. Hythe were the only team to win all of their group matches - earning them an automatic place in the final. After some careful counting of runs and wickets to determine the winner of the other group, Folkestone Falafels were declared as our opponents (again!). A tense match followed with both teams displaying excellent batting and fielding skills and for a moment it looked like Folkestone were going to triumph. However, the skills of wicket keeper Wendy gave Hythe the victory they deserved – a magnificent throw from the boundary taking out the wickets in the nick of time. Another trophy to add to our collection and a fitting tribute to the dedication and hard work the team have displayed this season.
Winning isn’t everything though. It really is the taking part that counts. To see so many women of all ages, abilities and walks of life playing cricket together, making new friendships and ultimately having lots of fun is the most rewarding feeling of all.
We are always on the lookout for new players and will begin training indoors shortly. If you’d like to give softball cricket a try then contact Jayne at womenscricket@hythecsc.com for further details.
