Move over Three Lions there’s a new football team in town… the Silver Lions. England’s official over-75s team are set to play Germany’s over-75s squad for a commemorative match marking the anniversary of the 1966 World Cup. So, 60 years after lifting the trophy, can England bring it home once again?

The commemorative match is due to kick off at 15:00 BST on 30 July at Oldham AFC - exactly 60 years after England's famous World Cup victory over West Germany at Wembley.

The Silver Lions hail from right across England and are an incredible line up of characters, including an 80-year-old nominee for Guernsey’s sports personality of the year; a beloved BBC radio presenter and former punk singer, and ‘International Johnny’ from Grimsby.

The Team Manager is none other than our own Ken Pollock - long term Club Member, Former Trustee and founder member of The Grovellers. So excited for Ken and the team!

There is a documentary team following the Silver Lions and their run up to the big match. The documentary will see team members being fitness checked by York St John University’s Institute for Health and Care Inclusion (IHCI). The team and their progress as ‘super agers’ will also form part of a study about communicating the benefits of healthy ageing.
