Racketball Tournament 2016

Saturday the 18th of June saw this year’s finals of the club’s annual racketball tournament. Five categories were contested, providing great entertainment for the assembled spectators. The Open category was won once again by Sean O’Donovan (winner of this event every year since the tournament started), with a comfortable 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 win over Philip Carter.

The Plate competition (for those who lost in their first match in the Open) was won by Jesse Mills, who posted an 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 score over last year’s winner, Michael Galvan.

Directly after that game, Mills played the Handicap final against Lee Divers and was again victorious. With a 2-0 handicap start, he scored 15-8, 15-13, 15-5. Mills was quick to assert that his handicap will probably be going up by at least ten points next year!

The other two categories provided hard-fought games that went the full distance. In the Ladies’ Handicap, Patti Mills started at 0 vs Emma Walton on 7 points, and lost the first two games, 12-15 and 8-15. The fightback began, and Mills eventually won the next three games (15-11, 15-13, 15-8) and the match.

The Doubles also went to 5 close and entertaining games, with Matt Day and Ed Barnes beating Jesse Mills and Simon Grainge 15-9, 11-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-8.
Racketball is increasing in popularity as a less intense but equally skilled alternative to squash – it is easier on the body and easier to pick up for older players as well as beginners. Why not come and experience a friendly taster session, try our facilities and hopefully then subscribe to club membership.
