Squash Tournament 2016

O’Donovan and Giles continue their dominance!

The Squash finals took place on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th April and provided a feast of entertainment for the spectators present. In the Open tournament, Sean O’ Donovan won his eleventh title in the last 13 years with a hard fought straight games win 3-0 over Kayvan Karimi, whose fitness was unable to overcome the dominant shot play of O’Donovan.

In the ladies final, Sue Giles won her 34th title in the last 36 years, despite spirited resistance from much improved Mel Booth. Again the score was 3-0 but Booth squandered several game balls in the 3rd before Giles triumphed once more.

The other finals resulted in an epic battle in the Open Plate final where Ross Emans overcame Finlay Clegg by 3 games to 2 with a vast contrast of styles and after a battle lasting over an hour. Ross also won the Minor Leagues event, where he overpowered Mel Booth in the final 3-0.

In the popular Doubles event, the partnership of Guy Adams and Michael Galvan lost the first game but eventually beat Darrel Moyle and Mel Booth 3-1 in an entertaining and often frenetic match.

Andrew Butler and Steve Davies played in both the Handicap Tournament and Veterans (045) Handicap finals, with Davies coming out winner in both: 3-2 in the Handicap and 3-1 in the Veterans Handicap. However Butler, with a particularly busy schedule, managed to dominate Cliff Walton in the Supervets (055) final 3-0.

The Junior section at the club is currently going from strength to strength and the tournament for this section saw defending champion Alex Avery use his experience to beat a younger opponent, Alex Boakes in the final 3-0.
